Volunteer Marshals

NOTE: The 5th annual Tour de Mississauga will take place on Sunday, September 16, 2012.  Stay tuned for details as the event gets closer.  Here’s what happened in 2011….

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: We rely on volunteer Marshals to assist riders at key points along the Tour de Mississauga routes.   High school students 16 years old and over can participate and earn credit for volunteer hours by assisting us in this important way.  In addition, Marshals will receive a FREE Tour T-shirt (in a different colour from the riders) and BBQ pass.  MCAC members will orient the students and assist in their transportation to their assigned posts along the routes.

If you are, or know, an interested student, or wish to be an adult volunteer, please e-mail: contact@mississaugacycling.ca.  We will then use your e-mail address to communicate with you in the lead-up to the Tour.

Please come to the Glass Pavilion attached to the Central Library on CHECK-IN DAY: Saturday, September 17, 2011 @ 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in order to receive your Marshal package, which includes a free Marshal T-shirt.

Volunteers need to be at Mississauga Celebration Square on the TOUR DAY: Sunday, September 18, 2011 @ 7:30 a.m. You will be back at the Square by 2:00 p.m. for the FREE BBQ.

Total volunteer credit awarded to High School students who come to the Saturday Check-in Day and arrive on time at 7:30 a.m. on the Sunday Tour Day will be: 7 hours.  We will confirm these hours in whatever way your High School collects this data.

In order to participate as a Marshal in the 2011 Tour de Mississauga, have the two (2) following Waiver forms signed by a parent/guardian and bring them with you on the CHECK-IN DAY (strongly preferred), or on TOUR DAY.

1. Click to download the MCAC Tour Marshals WAIVER.

2. Click to download the MCAC Tour City Volunteer Waiver.

3. Click to view MCAC Tour Marshals FAQ about being a Marshal.

4. Review the MCAC 2011 Tour Safety Sheet to become familiar with the rules the Tour riders need to follow.

THANKS TO THOSE MARSHALS FROM 2010 WHO HAVE ALREADY VOLUNTEERED FOR THIS YEAR!!

NOTE: One place we will need Marshals this year is on the Etobicoke Creek Trail for the 100m ‘bike portage’ portion, where cyclists must walk their bikes over irregular ground and massive tree roots, and may require assistance.  Take a look….

ROUTE PREVIEW: MCAC volunteers were out since late Winter, scouting routes for the 2011 Tour through the north-east quadrant and taking photos.  Click to view the PHOTO ALBUM: Etobicoke Creek Trail (66p PDF — may take a few seconds to download), which shows the adventure in store, along with some MCAC comments.  Note the 100m ‘land portage’.  Note also that the Edward Scarlett Park leg of the Trail was simply a meadow back in the Spring, and cyclists had to ride along a truck rut — trail construction has been proceeding all Summer, to prepare for the Tour riders!

Below: Two of our marshals last year, after the end of the 2010 Tour… thanks guys!
