POSTER: The 4th annual Tour de Mississauga POSTER is available here to download and print (or click image).  Please consider posting it in your place of business!

LOGO: This year MCAC has introduced a new identifying graphic for the Tour de Mississauga, shown prominently on our poster.  Take a look and soak it in. At first blush you will have been able to relate it to touring on a bike. We think the bike looks friendly which is important, because any kind of bike (including electric assist) is welcome on the Tour!

For those who want to encounter a ‘deep dive’ into the artwork and what it means to cycling advisory in Mississauga, read on….

The square shape of the graphic is inspired by the new ‘home’ of the Tour — Mississauga Celebration Square.  Starting this year, the Tour will start and end at the newly renovated Square.   Mississauga Celebration Square is the new START and FINISH for all Tour routes.  The Square opened officially on June 22, and already it has become the premier destination in the City, with a summer-long schedule of events.  The City Centre has been featured as a ride-by on all previous Tour routes, but now we plan to fill the Square with bikes on Sept. 18 and send the clearest possible message that ‘Mississauga IS Cycling’.  With better facilities to keep us organized as the Tour grows, we sure plan to make ourselves at home in the Square, permanently!

The wavy vertical centre line cues Mississauga’s most outstanding natural asset — the Credit River and the Culham Trail, which has been featured on previous Tours.

The bottom contour cues the popular Waterfront Trail along Lake Ontario and is also a nod to the wave on the bottom of the familiar City of Mississauga logo.

The four quadrants of the graphic reflect the annual rotation of Tour routes which highlight each and every corner of the City in turn.  In 2011, we are exploring the north-east quadrant (click for route information and maps) for the first time.

The City Centre was farmers’ fields not so long ago; now MCAC is doing some ploughing of its own in our increasingly urbanized environment — we’re farming bike facilities (hence, all the ‘lanes’ and ‘trails’ criss-crossing the quadrants) where the infrastructure was once infertile for active transportation, and creating / connecting new routes for both commuter and recreational cycling!

We’ve designed this logo ourselves — can you tell we’re into it?  We have worked collaboratively to articulate what the Tour is all about — and luckily one of us has volunteered his additional time as our graphic designer.  Thanks to MCAC member Don Stephens who has patiently worked with all our input to create what we think is a dynamic rendering of the Tour spirit, and a vivid logo to appear on Tour T-shirts, banners and promotional materials.  And we can’t wait to show you the new Tour jersey!

The MCAC spent considerable attention to designing the 2010 Tour Poster.  We hope it conveys the inclusive nature of the event: young and older, recreational and commuter, athletic and not so much…. anyone with a bike (or more) in their garage.  The green colour conveys the environmental and natural trails component.  The variety of bikes shows the routes go everywhere, both on and off-road.  The compass in the logo highlights our commitment to guiding riders through all four corners of our City, one quadrant at a time.  Hope you see yourself in the Poster, and we hope to see you out on this year’s Tour!
