MCAC volunteers are busy debriefing and reviewing the considerable input coming in following the 4th annual Tour de Mississauga which took place on Sunday, September 18. We so appreciate hearing your comments to help us improve and grow the event responsibly. Final counts are still being determined, based on additional manual registrations and walk-ups on Tour Day, but over 1200 riders and 50 volunteer marshals meant this was our biggest event so far. This was a key transitional year: while we had significant sponsors for the first time, we are still catching up to the fact that this is now a big event. With yesterday`s demonstrated support from the cycling community, we can better attract sponsors in 2012 to fund the amenities that Tour riders expect and require for such a large ride. WE HEAR YOU! It was only 3 short years ago that we first had 30 riders meet in a parking lot, and last year we were basically all over the grass at Streetsville Memorial Park. Your patience and confidence is deeply appreciated as we get ready for next year, which will focus on the Southeast quadrant of the City. Thanks for taking the time to send your thoughts for an event that is truly being shaped by its participants.

Please e-mail contact@mississaugacycling.ca if you`d like to add your input to our consultative process.

P.S. The Tour jerseys (sold at cost) were a complete sell-out (in less than 24 hours!).

A reminder: All registrants will be reimbursed for the `tech`T-shirt orders which could not be fulfilled and we regret that we could not deliver on that project — next year, we will anticipate the issues further ahead (which means the cutoff date for online T-shirt orders will have to be sooner).

WHO WON THE FREE DRAWS at the BBQ? See the top of our Sponsors webpage for the names of the 14 winners and their prizes!

POST-TOUR BENEFITS: Please check out our Sponsors webpage to find out what additional benefits they are offering. Take your 2011 Tour de Mississauga bike plate into the sponsors’ locations to be entitled to the discounts/special offers they have indicated.

The Mississauga News has an online article covering the 2010 Tour de Mississauga cycling adventure. With numbers reaching ever closer to the 1000 mark, the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee knew we would have to extend our talents futher than ever to keep up with the demand.

We were for blessed to have many volunteers outside of the MCAC offer to help out on the weekend of the 3rd annual event; without their help, our proverbial gears would have jammed. MCAC thanks all the volunteers and participants who helped make the 3rd annual Tour the grandest one yet.

As the event grows, we are growing with it – and so is cycling in Mississauga. With the Cycling Master Plan gaining approval this week, we feel we’re on a roll (pardon the pun). The comments are coming in and we want to encourage more participants to send us your comments, constructive critcism, and kudos as you saw it. Don’t hold back. The praise encourages us and the criticism will help future Tour de Mississauga events be even better!

Here is an excerpt from the Mississsauga News article by Debbie Bruce. Please visit the article and click to rate it a thumbs up:

The third annual Tour de Mississauga rolled into town this morning, with enough registrants on the list to impress even Lance Armstrong.
This year’s cycling tour is expecting over 1,000 participants, quite a jump from last year’s tally of 400.
“We’re tremendously excited,” said Dorothy Tomiuk, citizen member of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC). “The Tour is a great adventure that doesn’t just promote cycling, but our city and our city’s identity as well.” Read the entire article here.

Dear Cycling Colleagues – It’s a GO! We’ve got a great weather forecast for Sunday, September 19, 2010. Online registrations are still coming in and we are expecting a wonderful turnout! We’re swamped, frankly, so hope you get a chance to see this e-mail before the Tour!

PARKING: Naturally, we’re encouraging folks to bike to Streetsville, and we know many locals will be doing just that! NOTE: For those who need to drive their bikes to the event, we must ask you to park at the Streetsville GO Station (click here for map) which is practically across the street from the Registration area at Streetsville Memorial Park. Please do not park at Streetsville Memorial Park or Vic Johnston Arena – with the numbers we are expecting, we must park off-site.

REGISTRATION: Check-in / Registration is at Streetsville Memorial Park (click here for map) beside Vic Johnston Arena starting at 8:00 a.m. Riders start off at 9:30 a.m. If you pre-registered online, just pick up your numbered bike plate on the morning of the Tour. If you registered since Sept. 17 – PLEASE BRING A PRINTED WAIVER TO REGISTRATION, as you will be streamed with the in-person registrants, given the closeness to the date of the event. We will have 10 volunteers working the Registration tables to try to process everyone as quickly as we can.

ROUTES: Route maps are online and will be handed out at Registration. Yesterday and today our volunteers signed and marked 160km of roads and trails. In addition to the Tour signs, green spray “chalk” has been used on the roads and trails to aid in navigating the 25/60km routes, and red “chalk” has been used for the 100km route. Note the 60km route has a short cut (shown on the map) that reduces the distance to just over 40km — it’s virtually a fourth route! The routes are really cool — not to be missed is the Levi Creek Trail (the northern tip of the 60km route), for instance, which is a surprising wilderness area in the midst of our City, and in its full September glory.

SNACKS: You may wish to bring snacks (nuts, granola, dried fruit) along with you for an energy boost while riding, and a water bottle. Peel Region is providing water fill-up stations for us. The FREE lemonade stand in Old Meadowvale Village is gearing up for the onslaught! Use your bike plate (get at Registration) as your meal ticket for the FREE BBQ when you return from your ride.

SNEAK PEAK: Want a sneak peak of some of the sights you’ll see? View our visual presentation made to Council last Wednesday (45p PDF). And read our latest “editorial” Bicycles Boost Mississauga which addresses recent negative media about Mississauga as solely a car-oriented city with no identity.

Hope to see you tomorrow! Thanks from MCAC!

Bike bridges close gaps and with them, bicycles become the ultimate shortcut to where you want to be.

Whew! We are in our final week gearing up for the 3rd annual Tour de Mississauga: Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010. The weather is looking promising (knocking on wood BIG TIME here). The online registrations are pacing at more than double this time last year with hundreds already received (four came in while typing this far; wait, now it’s six, oops, seven…. well, you get the idea).

We are excited and humbled at the same time that folks from all over the City are willing to get out of their houses, come to Streetsville with their bikes, and try out the routes we’ve created to showcase the cycling infrastructure already in place. No road closures, nothing special — it’s all here, everyday of the year.

But of course “infrastructure” is a stuffy word, and for the participants, it’s about having an interesting, safe and continuous ride, and seeing the hidden gems and wonderful natural areas that can’t be known from a car.

Our Tour subcommittee is making a visual presentation to Council this Wed morning (right after the Cycling Master Plan presentation by Staff, who have been outstanding in their work on this project). The synergy is amazing between the Tour and the Master Plan. There is also a mind-body connection being made here against the landscape of the City itself, which expresses the spirit of our residents, and reveals as false the trashing of Mississauga and its citizens that we’ve seen in two recent Toronto Star articles: “Mississauga remains an abjectly car-dependent community that faces an uncertain future” (Hume); “Mississauga is a city without an identity” (Persichilli). BALONEY! (tempered reaction), and the rapidly growing Tour is but one sign of our unique and growing public culture of participation in a City we love. We live here intentionally, y’know.

This City may have been designed around the car (hey, it was the seventies), but the cycling retrofit is happening and MCAC is advocating hard for soonest implementation. The citizens want this, as shown during the Strategic Plan visioning exercise and the Cycling Master Plan, and Council gets it.

You may have read our previous e-mail blast to the cycling community (Sept. 10) where we said:

VOTE WITH YOUR WHEELS: By participating in the Tour, you help to show the importance of cycling in our City. MCAC is advocating for cycling participation, safety and connectivity. The Tour is a way we can showcase the great cycling infrastructure our City already has, and encourage more! When you register, you support the increasingly connected cycling community. Click to view our presentation ‘Mississauga IS Cycling’, made at Council in November 2009.

Just one of the many "hidden gems" in Mississauga you will encounter on the 3rd annual Tour de Mississauga Signature and Challenge rides.

We have followed this up with a lead item on our website citing the Mississauga News article of Sept. 10: Cyclists want bike network sped up and we are suggesting that riding on the Tour would support this effort.

It is a chance to learn about other neighbourhoods and see how we all live. The cycling community also enjoys an opportunity to meet one another and there is a definite social aspect to this. There is a camaraderie amongst cyclists, regardless of age, sex or level of athleticism, and being out en masse is inspiring and a source of communal strength (we’re used to the feeling of vulnerability when being up against the cars).

The Tour de Mississauga sub-committee is making a presentation to Council on Wed. Sept 15, 2010 with a slide deck that gives a sneak peek at the Tour (Download the PDF).

You see, the MCAC strives to represent all cyclists in Mississauga; and we want the Tour de Mississauga to be a cross-section that truly represents the cyclists of Mississauga streets.

Pedal power.
There have been cyclists on all styles of bikes in past Tours which even included road racing and fixed-gear bikes. Truth be told, there were even more cyclists with those styles of bicycles that didn’t participate because our signature route followed packed limestone trails that they considered “unsavory” for their narrow high-pressure tires. As a road racer myself, I had the luxury of also owning a mountain bike which I chose to ride. The signature route has always been a real eye-opening experience for me who normally spends all my cycling on the roads. It let me see a new and beautiful side to the city of Mississauga that I never had seen before. However, MCAC wants to give the more seasoned cyclists in the city a new challenge. This new challenge also presented me with challenges.

As one of the key designers of the new Challenge Road Ride, we reconciled the following guidelines in order to hold true to the spirit of the Tour de Mississauga:

The route should stay within Mississauga city limits. The Tour sets out to showcase new and existing bike infrastructures in Mississauga. Another secondary reason to this may be for insurance requirements for the Tour. I knew a sizable portion of Challenge Road Ride participants may spend much of their cycling time out in the Halton region. I had to avoid the temptation of sending cyclists out that way to some of my favourite rural roads while still keeping the epic ride interesting and non-disruptive.

The 3rd annual 2010 route should focus on the north-west quadrant of Mississauga. 100km inside just one quarter of any city is going to tie the hands of the planner. We were able to centre the ride on the NW quadrant with leeway to extend the Challenge Ride outside the quadrant. This balance of form and function made it quite easy to get a good ride put together.

Long rides should allow cyclists to “open up” without unnecessary stops. This would normally be tough if I wasn’t always out on a search for streets that let me turn up the speed when training for an upcoming event. I often don’t have time to cycle far from home so knowing from experience the safer non-disruptive corridors was helpful. We also tried to pick streets that had all-way stops instead of traffic lights so wait times aren’t long at intersections. Streets with long right-of-ways were also preferred. Roads that may be quite busy on weekdays were chosen if their Sunday morning traffic loads proved to be light. This gives the cyclist more confidence on the road to use the space they need for safer cycling.

The Challenge Road Ride must be only on roads. With Mississauga’s expanding cycling network, this was much easier today than it would have been even 3 years ago. Much of the Challenge Road Ride touches on bike lanes or signed bike routes. With the Mississauga Cycling Master Plan coming close to completion, we are expecting the cycling network to even more rapidly gain connectivity.

The route should be fun and informative. The Challenge Road Road touches on interesting sites, scenery, and villages within the city. Even if you’ve taken the road a hundred times before in a car, taking it once on a bike will surely reveal new features and a better understanding of getting around an area. Perhaps a fitness cyclist who just takes a single route in and out of the city on their bike may now realize that there are other cycling opportunities in Mississauga. After the Tour, they may be encouraged to ride their bicycle to work, community centre, stores, or gym instead of driving after seeing new ways of getting around.

Riding a metric century is certainly a challenge. Creating a metric century route within a city is almost as challenging. Mississauga’s cycling network is coming of age. The fact that viable long routes can be created all within city limits is a testimony to that.

Mississauga is cycling!

RAIN DATE: Sunday, September 27, 2009
(an online notice will appear the night before the scheduled Tour date if there is to be a rain cancellation)

STARTS and ENDS at: J.C. Saddington Park (click for map) in Port Credit

ORGANIZED by: Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC)

REGISTRATION: www.mississaugacycling.ca/tour/register

ROUTE: There are so many trails and routes to discover in Mississauga that the Cycling Committee has decided to break the City into four quadrants, and design a cycling route for each that highlights points of interest and special trails in that part of the City. All four routes will lead to City Centre at some point along the way, and the resultant map of all the routes will resemble a four-leaf clover emanating from the City Centre. After a four-year cycle, Tour participants will know the entire City well!

This year, the Tour de Mississauga route will focus on the Southwest quadrant of the City. This 50 km course highlights the off-road trails and other cycling routes available throughout SW Mississauga, starting and ending in Port Credit, and featuring a free BBQ at Memorial Park near the Tour’s end, courtesy of the Sierra Club. Map and directions are now available.

We plan to break into 3 groups according to speed: the fast group may complete the route in as little as 3 hours; the middle group may come in at around 4 hours, and the more leisurely group at around 5 hours. These times include washroom and refreshment breaks along the way.

The 2009 Tour includes an amazing array of experiences: the Waterfront Trail, highlights of new trail work, routes with bike lanes, public art (murals and sculpture), gardens, a brief “bike portage” in the Rattray Marsh, spins around the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) and Sheridan Research Park, a fantastic view of the tall buildings in the urban core as well as a loop of City Hall and the Central Library. Part of the ride will be along the Culham Trail which gets riders up close to the (currently) raging Credit River, after all the rains. The last part of the ride features an easy cruise down the brand new Confederation Parkway bike route with all its fresh paving and paint. Tunnels, bridges, natural areas and urban pavements, and rides by three (3) GO Stations: this route has got it all.

After this Tour, you’ll feel like you’ve seen the whole City, yet it is still only one quadrant! And most of the route is fairly flat: any reasonably in-shape adult will be able to complete it. There is a shorter, approx. 20 km route incorporated into the first leg of the Tour, which gives participants a chance to decide if they’d like to continue and do the whole ride, or quickly make it back to the starting point. There is also a get-off point further along.

Come out on September 20 and see what you’ve been missing — learn a great route you can ride again and again! A great way to meet other cyclists and people from all over the City.

Further details and this year’s route are being finalized. Meanwhile, check out last year’s (1st Official) Tour on the MCAC website to read about the experience and view last year’s route map and Tour instructions.

NOTE: Every September 22 is World Car Free Day. MCAC is putting theory into practice and celebrating Car Free Day by creating and riding routes through the City that will help create permanant change in transportation planning and habits. The Tour de Mississauga takes place annually on the weekend before September 22. Get out and celebrate!

It turned out to be a perfect fall day for the ride – sunny and cool in the morning, warming up nicely by noon. The turnout was strong with 20-30 riders present. Thanks to Derek from Gears Cycling all bikes were checked, tires inflated and seats adjusted for this 45km epic road and trail ride. We decided to reverse the ride so that we did the on-road portion early in the morning (less traffic) and ended with the glorious section on Culham Trail along the Credit River.

Our group started the ride heading east through Port Credit and the recently completed Stavebank Park. Slowing down to catch a glimpse of a breathtaking sunrise along the lake, we watched the canoeists practising their techniques on the mouth of the Credit River. We then headed north along Stavebank through the autumn beauty of the estate homes lining the river. Passing through the tunnel under the QEW (most riders did not know of its existence!) we headed north on Camilla Road toward the Cooksville Creek Trail.

The ride wound through Cooksville Creek’s trails blanketed by golden autumn leaves which led up to Iceland and Hershey Centre. From here we travelled westward on road to the Culham Trail which winds its way back down to the Credit River. A jog off the trail and we wound up in Mayor McCallion’s home town of Streetsville where we stopped for some hot chocolate and lattes courtesy of the local Starbucks.

We’re not still in Mississauga, are we?

After encountering a string of tranquil autumn scenes, including an early morning white-tailed deer off Mississauga Road, one cyclist was caught asking, “we’re not still in Mississauga, are we?”. All the pictures we could gather really couldn’t do the event justice. You really had to be there to experience it for yourself.

Three hours into the ride and three quarters through, we gingerly headed back down to the Credit and watched the salmon fighting the headwaters upstream. The river was a classic fall scene with anglers out fishing, and hikers on the trail. We then headed out through Erindale Park to the Mississauga Road South bike lane. This led us back to Saddington Park.

Safely back, we all headed off to the Clarkson Pump (our sponsor) for some well deserved veggies, wings and liquid refreshments. The smaller group of cyclists who were featured in the Missisauga News took the shorter Tour which headed west up the Culham Trail to Streetsville. They loved it so much that they are anticipating giving the full length tour a try next year.

Our total distance travelled was 47km and the ride time with stops was about five hours. The Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee is set to plan another grand cycling tour of Mississauga in 2009. We are expecting an even bigger group and look forward to seeing you there.
