Mayor Hazel McCallion, C.M., LL.D. and Members of Council of the City of Mississauga invite you to the Showcase Event for the Completion of Burnhamthorpe Road Bridges, Lookout Points and Cycling & Pedestrian Trails Tuesday, July 6, 2010 10:00 a.m. rain or shine.

Burnhamthorpe Bridge is a rare river crossing in Mississauga for cyclists. As long as I have seen, it has never really been considered a safe crossing by cyclists. Here are some qualities to examine while at the showcase:

Will this party announce no need for the signs that read: “CYCLISTS DISMOUNT – WALK BICYCLE ACROSS BRIDGE”?

Will trail cyclists have their very own trail that doesn’t merge in with the sidewalk across the bridge?

Will road cyclists have room on the road via bike lanes, sharrows, or even a paved shoulder to cycle across the bridge on the road?

Will the railings be tall enough for trail cyclists to feel safe from falling yet still not block out the fabulous view of the Credit Valley?

Now this event is a party, so show up there with bike bells on. Even if this new bridge doesn’t have everything we’re looking for, the city should be applauded for the efforts they have made. If you have a critiquing comment (good or bad), please send it to your councilor and a copy to the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee. Let’s hope there’s time in the showcase for a little Q & A.

For full details on the showcase event, view this PDF invitation.

The much more reliable method is to keep count of the number of cyclists poking their heads out of the garages and (fearlessly) gliding onto the Mississauga passageways. We’re starting to see, little by little, more cyclists out on the Mississauga roads this month. The next harbinger of Spring is the Toronto International Bicycle Show – and the Cycling Committee will be there. March 13 – 15, 2009.

This year, the Mississauga Cycling Committee will be hosting a booth at the show. We will be located in the most fun zone. Booth # 806 by the grandstands. Stop by on your way back to the BMX Jam, the Toronto X-Track, or otherwise to the – ahem – washrooms.

We want to be face to face with the cycling enthusiasts of the GTA. This is becoming the year of the bike in Mississauga and we want to hear what’s on your mind with all that’s going on:

Mississauga Transit is moving to install bike racks on the buses

Downtown 21 is presenting a cycling & walking dreamscape for the City Centre

The Mississauga Cycling Master Plan to bring their work to the public by June (editor’s note: June 2010)

Tour de Mississauga 2009 is looking to celebrate Car Free Day in September with the possibility of a special road closure for bicycles and pedestrians.

Bike to Work days will kickoff in May with a free pancake breakfast at City Hall.

Further connectivity is being constructed in our growing trail system, and a host of other grassroot initiatives are taking form from Malton to the beautiful south in Port Credit.

If none of that is reason enough for you to drop by, we will also be handing out the infamous Mississauga Bicycle Trail Map in its full glossy format. There are limited supply of the new 2009 Edition. So come by early to chat and sign up for our events and get your name on the Mississauga cycling contact list. Don’t worry, we also have the other map edition available if our supply of the 2009 Edition runs out.
