MCAC volunteers are busy debriefing and reviewing the considerable input coming in following the 4th annual Tour de Mississauga which took place on Sunday, September 18. We so appreciate hearing your comments to help us improve and grow the event responsibly. Final counts are still being determined, based on additional manual registrations and walk-ups on Tour Day, but over 1200 riders and 50 volunteer marshals meant this was our biggest event so far. This was a key transitional year: while we had significant sponsors for the first time, we are still catching up to the fact that this is now a big event. With yesterday`s demonstrated support from the cycling community, we can better attract sponsors in 2012 to fund the amenities that Tour riders expect and require for such a large ride. WE HEAR YOU! It was only 3 short years ago that we first had 30 riders meet in a parking lot, and last year we were basically all over the grass at Streetsville Memorial Park. Your patience and confidence is deeply appreciated as we get ready for next year, which will focus on the Southeast quadrant of the City. Thanks for taking the time to send your thoughts for an event that is truly being shaped by its participants.

Please e-mail contact@mississaugacycling.ca if you`d like to add your input to our consultative process.

P.S. The Tour jerseys (sold at cost) were a complete sell-out (in less than 24 hours!).

A reminder: All registrants will be reimbursed for the `tech`T-shirt orders which could not be fulfilled and we regret that we could not deliver on that project — next year, we will anticipate the issues further ahead (which means the cutoff date for online T-shirt orders will have to be sooner).

WHO WON THE FREE DRAWS at the BBQ? See the top of our Sponsors webpage for the names of the 14 winners and their prizes!

POST-TOUR BENEFITS: Please check out our Sponsors webpage to find out what additional benefits they are offering. Take your 2011 Tour de Mississauga bike plate into the sponsors’ locations to be entitled to the discounts/special offers they have indicated.

The Mississauga News has an online article covering the 2010 Tour de Mississauga cycling adventure. With numbers reaching ever closer to the 1000 mark, the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee knew we would have to extend our talents futher than ever to keep up with the demand.

We were for blessed to have many volunteers outside of the MCAC offer to help out on the weekend of the 3rd annual event; without their help, our proverbial gears would have jammed. MCAC thanks all the volunteers and participants who helped make the 3rd annual Tour the grandest one yet.

As the event grows, we are growing with it – and so is cycling in Mississauga. With the Cycling Master Plan gaining approval this week, we feel we’re on a roll (pardon the pun). The comments are coming in and we want to encourage more participants to send us your comments, constructive critcism, and kudos as you saw it. Don’t hold back. The praise encourages us and the criticism will help future Tour de Mississauga events be even better!

Here is an excerpt from the Mississsauga News article by Debbie Bruce. Please visit the article and click to rate it a thumbs up:

The third annual Tour de Mississauga rolled into town this morning, with enough registrants on the list to impress even Lance Armstrong.
This year’s cycling tour is expecting over 1,000 participants, quite a jump from last year’s tally of 400.
“We’re tremendously excited,” said Dorothy Tomiuk, citizen member of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC). “The Tour is a great adventure that doesn’t just promote cycling, but our city and our city’s identity as well.” Read the entire article here.

Dear Cycling Colleagues – It’s a GO! We’ve got a great weather forecast for Sunday, September 19, 2010. Online registrations are still coming in and we are expecting a wonderful turnout! We’re swamped, frankly, so hope you get a chance to see this e-mail before the Tour!

PARKING: Naturally, we’re encouraging folks to bike to Streetsville, and we know many locals will be doing just that! NOTE: For those who need to drive their bikes to the event, we must ask you to park at the Streetsville GO Station (click here for map) which is practically across the street from the Registration area at Streetsville Memorial Park. Please do not park at Streetsville Memorial Park or Vic Johnston Arena – with the numbers we are expecting, we must park off-site.

REGISTRATION: Check-in / Registration is at Streetsville Memorial Park (click here for map) beside Vic Johnston Arena starting at 8:00 a.m. Riders start off at 9:30 a.m. If you pre-registered online, just pick up your numbered bike plate on the morning of the Tour. If you registered since Sept. 17 – PLEASE BRING A PRINTED WAIVER TO REGISTRATION, as you will be streamed with the in-person registrants, given the closeness to the date of the event. We will have 10 volunteers working the Registration tables to try to process everyone as quickly as we can.

ROUTES: Route maps are online and will be handed out at Registration. Yesterday and today our volunteers signed and marked 160km of roads and trails. In addition to the Tour signs, green spray “chalk” has been used on the roads and trails to aid in navigating the 25/60km routes, and red “chalk” has been used for the 100km route. Note the 60km route has a short cut (shown on the map) that reduces the distance to just over 40km — it’s virtually a fourth route! The routes are really cool — not to be missed is the Levi Creek Trail (the northern tip of the 60km route), for instance, which is a surprising wilderness area in the midst of our City, and in its full September glory.

SNACKS: You may wish to bring snacks (nuts, granola, dried fruit) along with you for an energy boost while riding, and a water bottle. Peel Region is providing water fill-up stations for us. The FREE lemonade stand in Old Meadowvale Village is gearing up for the onslaught! Use your bike plate (get at Registration) as your meal ticket for the FREE BBQ when you return from your ride.

SNEAK PEAK: Want a sneak peak of some of the sights you’ll see? View our visual presentation made to Council last Wednesday (45p PDF). And read our latest “editorial” Bicycles Boost Mississauga which addresses recent negative media about Mississauga as solely a car-oriented city with no identity.

Hope to see you tomorrow! Thanks from MCAC!

Smart Commute Mississauga has planned what looks to be the best Bike To Work Day yet in Mississauga. Mississauga Cycling is proud to play an active role in supporting this meaningful and fun event.
An interesting component of Bike To Work Day is the Corporate Leaders Challenge which encourages CEOs, managers, and team leaders/supervisors to cycle to work and encourage their staff to do the same. Leaders will have a chance to win a free half-page ad in the Toronto Star which features their Bike To Work testimonial. I have noticed an increase in the amount of companies registered for the Leaders Challenge. Could this be showing that employers are recognizing the benefits for making it easier for employees to bike to work? People that use a bicycle instead of a car are proven to have better focus on the job, harmful vehicle emissions are reduced, and the cyclist enjoys better health. When people cycle to work, everyone wins.

Smart Commute Mississauga is encouraging all cyclists to participate in the Bike Friday campaign by riding to work on the last Friday of each month. Riding in a group encourages novice cyclists to participate and makes cyclists more visible to motorists. Organized rides also show motorists that cycling is a viable alternative to driving.

On the Mississauga cycling committee field trips, we set out on as small groups on our bicycles to evaluate specific portions of the city’s cycling network. You are invited to join us on Tuesday May 19, 2009 at 7:00pm at Burnhamthorpe and Confederation. Come cycle with us and be an active part in improving cycling in the city, get to know some of the committee members and discover new areas to cycle.

Meet on the Burnhamthorpe Trail at Confederation Parkway

We recommend that you come with a helmut and your bicycle be equipped with lights and reflectors to ensure a safer trip back to your starting point.

Objectives

Identify suitable cycling routes into the City Centre Area to publicize for use on Canada Day. Ideally, one each from the north, the south, the east and west. Identify any missing connections along these routes.

Ride the Cooksville Creek Trail from Burnhamthorpe southwards to the North Service Road with the view of documenting trail issues and missing connections. Examine the connections to the new bike lanes on Mississauga Valley Blvd.

Please RSVP with our Trail Coordinator using the form (below) so that we will have an idea of how many people to expect. We may need to limit the number of participants for manageability so get your name in early!
