Over the years, Mississauga has gained over 100km of bicycle lanes and pathways. Now more than ever, new projects for bicycle infrastructure are being designed and implemented.
Check this page regularly for updates on where to look for the latest developments. We will also try to alert cyclists in Mississauga with special instructions on how to best navigate these developing areas:
Cross-rides on Sheridan Park Drive
Estimated completion date: mid-September 2009
Location 1: Sheridan Park Drive & Homelands Drive/Speakman
Location 2: Sheridan Park Drive & Fifth Line West
A total of six bicycle cross-rides projects are planned for as part of the Cross-ride pilot project in Mississauga.
Riding a bicycle in or along a crosswalk has not been permitted in Ontario as per the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Under the Act, a cyclist is required to stop, dismount, and walk their bicycle in the crosswalk.
A Cross-ride is a separate bicycle crossing (separate from the pedestrian crosswalk). This pilot project would allow a cyclist to ride within the separate bicycle crossing. Riding a bicycle through a crosswalk without a separate facility continues to be prohibited. A cyclist must still obey the rules of the road. For more information, see Mississauga Cycling’s original posting on cross-rides.
Kariya Drive
Notice Date: May 2009
Location: Kariya Drive from Elm Drive to Burnhamthorpe
Distance: 0.4 KM
Besides being able to make it better for cycling into the downtown area, we understand another purpose of these on-road bike lanes is to calm automobile traffic on Kariya. The street was never meant to be a fast throughway. Mississauga Cycling commends the city’s traffic dept. for this decision as it will make it safer for everyone in that area. Cyclists should also be excited to see that this will complete a 2.2 KM connected route as it joins with Elm Drive and Mississauga Valley Blvd.
Elm Drive
Notice Date: May 13, 2009 (approved by Council)
Location: Elm Drive from Kariya Drive to Mississauga Valley Blvd.
Distance: 0.6 KM on-road bike lanes
This is for bicycle lanes in both directions. The approval includes a parking prohibition on the south side of Elm Drive East between Hurontario Street and Mississauga Valley Boulevard and a parking prohibition on both sides of Elm Drive West between Karyia Drive and Hurontario Street. You will also be pleased to know that bicycle lanes in both directions have been slated for painting on Kariya Drive.
Mississauga Valley Boulevard
Notice Date: May 13, 2009 (approved by Council)
Location: Mississauga Valley Blvd. connecting Central Parkway on northwestern leg
Distance: 1.2 KM on-road bike lanes
This will put bicycle lanes on both sides of the boulevard.
Bicycle traffic loop detector –> Pilot study!
Notice date: April 22, 2009
Location: West intersection of Central Parkway and Mississauga Valley Boulevard
The City of Mississauga recently installed a bike loop at Central Parkway at Mississauga Valley Boulevard (west intersection) as part of a pilot project.
The purpose of the bicycle loop is to initiate the side street green traffic signal phase from the bicycle lane (on Mississauga Valley Boulevard).
If you find yourself in the area within the next couple weeks of this notice please post here and let us know of your experience with the loop detector. As this is a pilot study, the more feedback we can get for this, the better.
Burnhamthorpe Bridge over Credit River
Notice Date: April 23, 2009
Location: Burnhamthorpe Road W. bridge crossing Credit River
Distance: 1.2 KM including bridge widening for bicycles
Estimated Time: May through December, 2009
More details will be coming.
Eastbound cyclists will need to walk their bicycles across this bridge during its reconstruction as traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction. Westbound cyclists may also be required to walk their bike, It is advised to find an alternate route across the river, such as:
- Dundas St. W. to the south
- Eglinton Ave W. to the north
If you have found a good alternate route, please post in the comments to benefit other cyclists in the area. We share in your pain but keep in mind this construction will bring about a wider bridge with much more room for cyclists to RIDE their bikes across!
